Tracing its origins back to 1952 when T.Y. Chao founded the Wah Kwong group, Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings Ltd today represents the shipowning interests of the Chao family, led by George Chao, Chairman of the company. Owning and managing a diverse fleet of thirty modern ships, Wah Kwong is a leading shipowner in the tanker, bulkcarrier and LPG markets. All of the group’s fleet were contracted by the company as newbuildings and trade on timecharter to leading industrial, commodity and transport interests around the world. In addition, several of the company’s ships are jointly owned with leading Asian and European shipowner partners.
Wah Kwong has grown to become one of the largest independent shipowners in Hong Kong, utilizing the traditional Hong Kong shipowner business model of building ships against long term charters. With an average fleet age of around three years, Wah Kwong operates one of the youngest fleets in the world, the entire fleet being operated and managed from its Hong Kong headquarters and all flying the Hong Kong flag.
